Bridge & Retaining Wall Maintenance - Muggleton Bridge, Isle Of Wight

Written by SoluForm | Sep 8, 2026, 9:04:24 AM

A number of projects were undertaken across the Isle of Wight to maintain its roads and bridges on an ongoing basis. One of these projects involved Muggleton Bridge, where a destabilised embankment had resulted in continued deterioration.

What was the challenge?

Scour occurs when flowing water erodes soil, gravel, sand and other materials around bridge foundations, walls and culverts. If left untreated, it can weaken these structures and, in severe cases, cause them to collapse. At Muggleton Bridge, the challenge was to install above water prefilled concrete bagwork to build up the embankment affected by scour, restore its structural integrity and prevent further erosion.

What was the solution?

SoluForm’s above water prefilled concrete bagwork was specified for the scheme as the combined solution.

Using SoluForm’s above water prefilled concrete bagwork, the eroded bank was rebuilt with a continuous foundation layer before the bags were built up to create a stable embankment wall. This provided immediate scour protection, strengthened the bridge and delivered a durable, visually neat finish. The completed structure was designed to accommodate future loading while providing long term stability to the embankment and bridge and erosion to riverbanks.

What was the outcome for the client?

The works were adapted to suit the requirements of the location, including maintenance of bridge supports and walls and the installation of erosion protection along riverbanks. Environmentally sensitive construction methods were used throughout to minimise disturbance to the surrounding waterways and landscape.
